Ex-Jupiter businessman acquitted of defrauding taxpayers to get lawyer

WEST PALM BEACH — With a child in private school, a new car, and a consulting job with an engineering firm, prosecutors said Brett Cormier was hardly the type of criminal defendant who deserved to have taxpayers foot the bill for his attorney.

In fact, when Cormier qualified for a public defender who represented him for six months on a fraud case, prosecutors reviewed his applications and in a rare move charged him with a felony charge of scheming to defraud, saying he lied to get the services of a public defender he didn't deserve.
